Nokia's First Dual sim mobile c1

Nokia has announced the launch of its first dual SIM handsets in India. This launch comes a few months after the initial announcement regarding Nokia foray in to the highly competitive dual SIM segment in the country.

The dual SIM range in India is mostly dominated by smaller players and unbranded Chinese phones so far and have proved to be extremely popular amongst the masses. Even mainstream manufacturers like Samsung and LG have dual SIM handsets in their kitty. Nokia, however, had stayed back and decided to be a silent spectator until now.

As for the new launches, the phones in question are the C1-00 and C2. The Nokia C1-00 costs Rs. 1,999 and  boasts of  basic features like a 128 x 160 pixels TFT color screen, 3.5mm headset jack, FM radio, SMS, flashlight. It offers up to six weeks of stand-by time. The C1-00 can take in two SIM cards but only one would be active at any given point of time. Users can switch from one SIM to another with the flick of a switch. As mentioned earlier, The C1-00 offers users a standby battery time of up to six weeks, the longest ever for a Nokia mobile phone, especially useful in those parts of the world where access to electricity is limited.

Next is the Nokia C2 which is expected to be priced at around Rs. 2,500 (the official price is yet to be revealed). It will run on the Nokia S40 platform and allows both SIM cards to be used together. This phone also supports GPRS, Nokia Life Tools, Stereo FM radio with FM recording, 3.5mm headset jack, VGA photo camera, and MicroSD card support. The first SIM card on the Nokia C2 sits underneath the battery and the second is 'hot-swappable', a feature unique to Nokia. This means the second SIM card can be removed and inserted when the phone is on. It can also take microSD cards of up to 32GB!

While you can buy a C1-00 now, Nokia is yet to officially launch its other dual SIM handsets here. You might want to read more about each one of them here.

India's first e-reader Wink unveiled

Bangalore-based digital publisher EC Media International has launched its multi-function e-book reader Wink that not only supports 15 languages but will also offer over 200,000 book titles on debut.

Wink will offer consumers a one-stop e-store to access e-reading content of choice via www.thewinkstore.com that would enable access not just to e-books, but also journals, newspapers, magazines and selected articles, EC Media said.

Many of the titles have been acquired from international aggregators, giving Indians access to a whole lot of books not available in the country. "With the launch of Wink, we aim to revolutionise the way people read," said Ravi DeeCee, founder and chief executive of DC Group, which has promoted EC Media and the Kerala-based publishing house DC Books.

"Wink will allow readers to access their favourite content anytime, anywhere, that, too, in the language of their choice," he said.

Another offering will be Wink Wire for news, the first e-reader newspaper in India. EC Media has entered into a content alliance with IANS, India's largest independent news service, for Wink Wire.

EC Media's e-reader itself is designed primarily for reading digital books and periodicals but users can also listen to music, check e-mails or even play games, executives said.

This e-reader uses e-ink technology to display content to readers, and the main advantages of these features are portability, strain-free reading even in bright sunlight and substantial battery life.

"With the launch of Wink, we want to enable the growth of content provisioning through electronic medium by leveraging existing eco-system of global tie-ups with publishers and aggregators," said Pradeep Palazhi, chief operating officer of EC Media. "We hope to succeed in attaining this vision."

The group also aims to help publishers and authors leverage the new platform, simplifying the process of publishing -- from the draft of a book to its final printing, besides also helping them to reach out to a larger audience.

Wink has enrolled top publishers like Penguin, Roli, Oxford University, Harper Collins and Permanent Black for content so far. It will provide access to over 100,000 tiles to begin with, along with some newspapers and magazines.

The group has also announced a tie-up with Croma, the electronics megastore promoted by the Tata Group, as its retail partner. It has also roped in Redington as its distribution partner. "From a consumer perspective, it's going to be a resourceful investment. It will certainly enhance their reading experience with a variety of offerings," said Ajit Joshi, chief executive of Croma Electronics Megastore.

Explaining how the e-reader works, officials said a user can access the online store from the web or through the catalogue present on the gadget, intuitively designed for easy preview of content, downloads and a secure payment gateway.

The Wink store will have a strong base of regional language content on top of a wide-variety of international titles and category of e-books. Members will be able to avail of special deals and discounts on the store, they added. !-- START ADONION CODE -->

India to become world's third largest economy by 2030

Hawksworth, an economist based in London, projects that India will become the third-largest economy racing past Japan. According to him, after 2020, India will grow more quickly than China because it will have a younger and faster-growing population. He added that the Chinese growth will begin to slow after 2020 because of its rapidly aging population.

India's growth can be accredited to pharmaceuticals, power, telecommunications, civil aviation, insurance and real estate and an increasing foreign direct investment influx. As per an internal survey, India's working age population is expected to grow continuously over the next 40 years.

One prime factor for India's development will be the consumer base which is much higher as compared to China and thus a better invested capital.

According to the International Monetary Fund Estimates, the Chinese economy will total about $5.4 trillion this year, while the U.S. one will be about $14.8 trillion - almost three times the size of the Chinese economy. To catch the U.S.China will have to grow extremely fast while the U.S. economy dawdles.

For China to catch the U.S. in 10 years, its economy would have to grow at more than 12 percent per annum, for example, while the U.S. grows at 2 percent, Bryson estimates. However, most economists say, it is unlikely that China will have sustained growth that high and the U.S. will be that low.

Now control your Android phone with your voice

Google has released a new mobile app, called Voice Actions, for the Android mobile phones. This new app allows you to control your phone via interactive voice commands. With this app at your service, you can perform the common Android actions by just 'talking' to the phone.

The new feature was described in the Official Google Blog. Google said, "Our mobile phones have become modern-day Swiss Army knives. An Android phone is a handheld computer, a music player, a notepad, a GPS navigation unit and more, all rolled into one sleek device that fits in your pocket. Even though our phones do all these new things, the most natural way of interacting with a phone remains what it always has been: speaking. And to that end, we're pleased to introduce Voice Actions for Android."

With the help of Voice Actions, you can browse the web, listen to music, send texts and emails, and call businesses and contacts. However, to use the app, it is necessary to activate the 'Speak Now' screen on the phone physical search button or tap the microphone button that is displayed on the search box of Google on the user's home screen. Other things that Voice Actions allows users to do is navigate to a location or get a map or directions, record a note to self, set alarms etc.

The thing to be noted here is that Voice Actions would require Android 2.2 (Froyo) to run. Froyo will come pre-installed with the new Droid 2 phones from Motorola. !-- START ADONION CODE -->

Indians never called U.S. as 'banana republic'

Since Indians never call U.S. a 'banana republic' the U.S. senator shouldn't have called one of our companies a 'chop shop'.

"Indian IT industry has made notable contribution and has acknowledged global presence." It is a foolishness to call Indians companies as "Chop Shop".

Criticising companies outsourcing American jobs, Schumer had last week described Infosys as a "chop shop", a place where stolen cars are dismantled and parts sold separately.

Trojan-SMS virus attacks Android handsets

Anti-virus specialist Kaspersky Labs has found its first reported case of a Trojan-SMS that attacks Android handsets recently. There have been cases of the same type of malware on non-smartphones, but this is the first targeted at users of Google's operating system.

"The IT market research and analysis organization IDC has noted that those selling devices running Android are experiencing the highest growth in sales among smartphone manufacturers. As a result, we can expect to see a corresponding rise in the amount of malware targeting that platform," says Denis Maslennikov, the company's Mobile Research Group manager.

The virus, Trojan-SMS.AndroidOS.FakePlayer.a, comes disguised as a media player application and prompts users to install a file of just over 13 KB with the standard Android extension .APK. It then uses the phone to send multiple SMS text messages to premium rate numbers without the owner's knowledge. Obviously, this could end up costing the handset owner a fortune, and make a packet for scrupulous cybercriminals.

"Kaspersky Lab is actively developing technologies and solutions to protect this operating system and plans to release Kaspersky Mobile Security for Android in early 2011," added Maslennikov.

U.S. Senator calls Infy as "chop shop" - a shop that sells stolen goods

Criticizing companies outsourcing highly-paid American jobs, a U.S. Senator has described Indian IT major Infosys as a "chop shop", a place where stolen cars are dismantled and parts sold separately. A U.S. senator supported raising H1-B visa fees for them to raise $600 million to secure the porous U.S.-Mexican border.

This is highly humiliating statements from the senate friends .........
Everybody knows that who is benefited by whom........
Indian IT companies are not going to loose anything..........
First of all they are suffering from recession ,if they are going to apply these rules they will definitely repent for their mistakes in the future.

HOT SPOT - Now its not just cricket....lets call it " TechnoCricket!"

'Hot Spot' technology is to be added to the permitted decision-making aids at the disposal of the third umpire in the second and third Tests between South Africa and Australia.

The International Cricket Council on Wednesday confirmed the addition to its ongoing technology trial in Test matches.

Third-umpire referrals caused much controversy in the recently-concluded fourth Test between West Indies and England in Bridgetown, thanks to a succession of debatable lbw rulings.

'Hot Spot' was not available to Daryl Harper at the Kensington Oval, where it was the absence of 'predictive Hawkeye' from the third umpire's armoury which was the main bone of contention.

Billy Bowden
Billy Bowden

Whereas that facility would have made it easier for Harper to advise his colleagues on the likely track of the ball had it not first hit the batsman's pad, 'Hot Spot' indicates, using infra-red cameras, the ball's exact point of impact with bat, pad, glove or ground.

Looking forward to a 'Hot Spot' debut in Durban on Friday, ICC general manager - cricket David Richardson explained: "By having 'Hot Spot' available, it means the television official will have even more information at his disposal if he is called upon, via a request for a review, to assist the on-field umpires with a decision. That has to be a good thing."

"It also means that when the ICC cricket committee meets in May to consider the issue of the technology trial it will have a much more complete picture of the aids available for use and whether, and if so how well, they worked in a match situation."

"The key purposes of the technology trial are to see if we can lift the already-high percentage of correct decisions made by our umpires and also eradicate the rare occasions when a clearly incorrect decision has been made."

"We hope 'Hot Spot' can play a part over the next two Tests in Durban and Cape Town in establishing whether technology has a role to play in helping achieve those aims."

The third official in Durban will be Steve Bucknor, and the on-field umpires will be Asad Rauf and Billy Bowden.

Profiles of 100 million Facebook users leaked online

A security researcher on Wednesday released a file containing the names, profile addresses and unique identification numbers of more than 100 million Facebook users. The information was corralled via a public directory Facebook makes available that lists users who are sharing at least some of their profile information with everyone on the Internet. It was collected and uploaded by Ron Bowes, a security researcher with Skull Security. Although the information in the file is freely available online through search engines and Facebook's own directory, the organized list of names and identification numbers in it could make it easier for others to compile users' e-mail addresses, location or other data they have made available. The 2.8-gigabyte BitTorrent file also includes the programming code that Mr. Bowes used to scan the directory list. Facebook issued a statement via e-mail noting that the list of users' names is not a threat to those who are comfortable sharing publicly:

People who use Facebook own their information and have the right to share only what they want, with whom they want, and when they want. Our responsibility is to respect their wishes. In this case, information that people have agreed to make public was collected by a single researcher. This information already exists in Google, Bing, other search engines, as well as on Facebook. No private data is available or has been compromised. Similar to the white pages of the phone book, this is the information available to enable people to find each other, which is the reason people join Facebook. If someone does not want to be found, we also offer a number of controls to enable people not to appear in search on Facebook, in search engines, or share any information with applications. Facebook has said in the past that a large portion of its users change some of their privacy settings on the Web site. Some users choose not to change their privacy settings and happily share personal images and content with the whole Web. But some fail to change their settings due to a lack of understanding of the available options. Mr. Bowes said in a blog post that he decided to compile the list of user information and share it online to show that there is "a scary privacy issue" at play with the way people share their information with the rest of the Web through Facebook. It was not clear what his motives were for publicly sharing the the list online. In the past Mr. Bowes has also written about Facebook's privacy policy and the ease with which hackers can find personal information through the site. Facebook users who want to keep their information off of the wider Internet should go into the Facebook privacy settings tab and change the "Sharing on Facebook" options to "Friends only." Those who want to keep their profiles from being found in search engines like Google should also click the "Edit your settings" link at lower left and change the setting for "Public Search.

Facebook reaches 500 Million users

Social networking site Facebook officially has 500 million users, the company announced Wednesday. The milestone means that the six-year old website now reaches eight percent of the planet's population, just 18 months after it passed the 150 million user mark.

Last month Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said there is a "good chance" that the social networking site could boast one billion users within three to five years.

Facebook has continued adding users at a record-setting pace despite growing concerns about the privacy policies of a site that has more data on its users than any other website.

Facebook marked the milestone with the launch of a special section in which users are encouraged to post their personal stories about how Facebook has affected them.

"Half a billion is a nice number but the number isn't what really matters here. What matters are all of the stories we hear from all of you about the impact your connections have had on your lives," Zuckerberg said in a video message.

"Instead of focusing on numbers, we want to help people around the world hear about these stories for themselves, and we want to let you tell your own story."

Airtel to bring iPhone 4 To India

The much hyped iPhone 4 would soon hit the Indian mobile market if all goes well between the country's largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, and the handset maker, Apple.

"We are working with Apple. Hopefully in the September-October time frame we would launch the phone," Sanjay Kapoor, Chief Executive of Bharti Airtel (India and South Asia), told reporters on the sidelines of a CII conference.

Earlier in June, Vodafone Essar had spoken of its plans to launch the iPhone 4 in India, without specifying a timeframe for the same.

On the rollout of Broadband Wireless Access services in four circles - Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kolkata and Punjab - which it bagged for Rs.3,314.36 crore, Kapoor said they were still to decide on the technology that will be used.

Airtel, which won 13 circles in the auction of airwaves for third generation (3G) telephony spectrum, shelling out Rs.12,295.46 crore ($2.73 billion), has also started gearing up its network to enable a quicker rollout of such services.

Bharti Airtel already sells iPhone 3GS in India priced at Rs 35,500 for the 16 GB model and Rs. 41,500 for the 32GB model.

Apple had last month announced the launch of the iPhone 4 with a sharper screen and video-chat features in an attempt to ward-off competition from devices running Google's Android software.

"As far as 3G is concerned, a very large amount of the network is 3G ready. We are working towards an aggressive timeline," said Kapoor.

Indian Rupee gets a new symbol

India has finally got a symbol for the Rupee and joined a select club of countries whose currencies have an unique identity.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the design, which includes both the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' and has two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolise the equal to sign.

"With this India will join an elite group of countries which have a distinct currency symbol. It denotes the robustness of Indian economy. I will now hold up the design that was finally selected. This was sent in by Udaya Kumar," said Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni in New Delhi.

She said that the Rupee symbol was a nice blend of modernity and Indian culture. The symbol selected has been designed by anIndian Institute of Technology postgraduate D Udaya Kumar and was selected from among five short listed symbols. Kumar, who is with the Department of Design at IIT Guwahati, explained thatthe design is based on the Indian Tricolour.

"My design is based on the Tricolour with two lines at the top and white space in between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to represent the Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital 'R', and Devnagari 'Ra', which represent rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences. After working onthe design for few months, I shortlisted eight to 10 designs and then refined them further till I got this one," said Kumar.

All new notes will now bear the symbol.

Eye tracking to detect lies,

Detecting lies by tracking eye movement became possible recently because of the advent of technology. Educational psychologists-John, Kircher, Doug Hacker, Anne Cook, Don Waltz and David Raskin are making use of an eye tracking technology to provide an alternative to the polygraph for lie detection.

The researchers from the University of Utah, claim they are the first to develop and assess the software and methods for applying these tests effectively and would be commercializing in coming years. Instead of measuring a person's emotional reaction, which usually a polygraph test does, eye tracking technology can measure a person's cognitive reaction.

A number of measurements were recorded by Utah researchers while a subject is answering a series of true and false questions on a computer. The pupil dilution, response time, reading and rereading time and errors were measured by the Utah researchers. The researchers wanted to know whether the subject is working hard to hide the truth or not as they determined that, speaking the truth is much easier than lying. "We have gotten great results from our experiments. They are as good as or better than the polygraph and we are still in the early stages of this innovative new method to determine if someone is trying to deceive you," says Kircher.

Eye tracking would cost relatively lesser than polygraph and requires one fifth of the time currently needed for examinations. Besides that, it requires no attachment to the subject being tested, be available in any language and can be supervised by technicians rather than qualified polygraph examiners.

send email using mobile phone camera

Soon, we will be able to send an email using a mobile phone camera, thanks to the HP Labs in Bangalore, which is about to roll out a technology that would convert any mobile with a camera into an emailing device, reports KV Ramana from DNA.

DNA quotes Sudhir Dixit, Director of HP Labs India as saying "We are putting the technology to test. We plan to roll it out shortly." The technology would use high-end image processing to faciliate this. "It is all about making effective use of a mobile phone and a piece of paper," Dixit said.

With this technology, the user just have to photograph the text, including the e mail address of the recipient, written on a paper or any where with a camera mobile phone with the software application that HP Labs is planning to roll out. The application will process the email image, convert it into normal text mail and send it to the addressee.

"We find PC penetration and internet usage in India to be abysmally low. We found that people are also averse to using a keyboard and a mouse. They use paper everyday and the PC has not changed the way the paper is used. Local language content is also a key hurdle. There is not much content available in local language and for whatever is available, the keyboard is not very useful. But, at the same time, there are 600 million mobiles in India," Dixit said. "Normally, people carry a piece of paper and a mobile phone in their pocket. Our task was to combine both. In this process, we have developed this email technology," Dixit said.

HP Labs then started working on surmounting these hurdles and launched a project called 'Big Bet' in November last year. As a part of this, research teams at the lab have come out with eight technologies that would bridge the IT divide and make effective use of the devices users already own, apart from a PC.

The company has announced a technology dubbed as SiteonMobile, which has also been developed as part of the Big Bet project. This is aimed at making the internet content and services available to the masses even from low-end mobile phones without having to use a smartphone. This involves combining voice and SMS on low-end phones.

Concept 'HTC 1' is the phone we wish HTC would make

Designer Andrew Kim has cooked up a concept smartphone for HTC dubbed the "1" that makes the company's current offerings look, well... last generation. The device, built from a brass housing (coated in silver) eschews the phone-maker's recent crop of fairly standard looking mobile devices for something decidedly more sophisticated -- and cans the familiar Sense interface in the process. Not only is the shell of the phone rethought, the new UI (Sense mono) takes a cleaner, more thoughtful, high-end approach as well, joining Synergy like functions (combined messaging) with a Helvetica heavy interface that looks streamlined and mature. Some notable features of the hardware include stereo speakers (located at the top and bottom of the phone), a kickstand which is actually the bottom portion of the casing, and the lofty concept of a built-in UV light which kills germs on the surface of the phone while you charge up. As far as concepts go, this is one of the finest we've seen, so hit the source link below and take a look at the full spread.

iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!

Screen 960 x 640, 3.5-inch 800 x 480, 4.3-inch
Thickness 0.37-inch 0.47-inch
Primary camera 5 megapixel 8 megapixel
Secondary camera VGA 1.3 megapixel
Video chat FaceTime Qik

Not enough for you? We'll have a big comparison of all the "majors" for you shortly.

Now, there's a lot left to learn about Apple's FaceTime video chat service. For instance, they called it "open," but they also only mentioned a zero-configuration iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calling setup. Meanwhile Qik can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps). No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service. However, a premium version of Qik for $5 a month lets you go beyond that resolution, using the EVO's higher resolution cameras. Perhaps the largest distinction is the fact that the EVO can stream video calls over 3G or 4G, while the iPhone 4 is constrained to WiFi for the time being. Naturally, we expect other video calling apps (Skype, please?) to crop up on both platforms and give these initial offerings a run for their money.

Internet users can help track fugitives: Interpol

Lyon: Interpol, the international police agency, believes that internet users can be helpful in tracking down many criminals who are wanted for serious crimes like murder, rape, child sexual abuse and others.

Interpol has launched a round-up operation on May 3 to trap 450 people, who are either convicted or suspected of serious offences. The operation is spread over 29 countries. The agency also stated that more than 100 fugitives have been arrested or located worldwide.

Some of the high profile arrests include former Colombian model Angie Sanclemente Valencia, who was wanted for drug trafficking. She was caught in Argentina in May. Mouamba Munanga, wanted for counterfeit currency and money-laundering by France and Bahrain was caught in South Africa on June 16.

Public pictures of 26 fugitives have been released by the Interpol to back its appeal for help from Internet users.

Martin Cox, Assistant Director of Interpol's Fugitive Investigative Support (FIS) unit said,
"The operation has been very successful in locating and arresting a large number of these targets, but what we are now left with are the cases where we have no new information on their whereabouts, which is why we are asking for the public to help. It is more likely that someone will recognize one these fugitives from a social networking site or a chat room than spotting them walking down the street."

Any information on the fugitives can be sent to fugitive@interpol.int or be anonymously given to National Crime Stoppers programs.
